2026 Summer Interns

Over the summer, Cambridge Atomworks was delighted to welcome Alex Hempel, Rachel Wald and Sol Inglis to the team as technical interns. During their time interning with us, they have investigated and contributed towards key features of the ODIN micro-reactor and gained hands-on experience in the nuclear industry working in our Cambridge offices and new laboratory facility at Granta Park.

Alex, who was working with the Physics team, said "I’ve had an incredible summer working with the team at Cambridge Atomworks. Being surrounded by experts across lots of physics and engineering disciplines gave me a really in depth appreciation of nuclear micro-reactors from start to finish. I’m especially grateful for the physics team for being supportive and giving me the opportunity to work with neutronics codes I otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to. I’m really excited to watch Cambridge Atomworks grow in the future!”

Rachel, who was working with the Engineering Design team, said "It’s been an amazing experience delving into the work and life at Cambridge Atomworks this summer and getting a sense of the fast pace and high responsibility associated with a startup. I have been lucky to contribute across several different engineering areas, from core structures to fuel correlations, and I am grateful to the very capable physicists and engineers at Cambridge Atomworks for imparting their wisdom and great energy on me, which I will take into the future"

Sol, who was working with the Thermal Hydraulics team, said "It was really interesting to sit in on meetings and be able to listen in on everything that was being discussed - we definitely got a good sense of everything that was happening and not just the specific projects that we were working on. I really enjoyed the combination of practical work in the High Bay and the more research based work in the office. It was great to work with the thermal hydraulics team and also to spend so much time with the materials team, hearing about what everyone at the company was up to."
